Film legends Gene Hackman, James Earl Jones, Maggie Smith, Gena Rowlands and Donald Sutherland were several of the stars who were honored during this year's Oscars’ 'In Memoriam' segment at the 97th Academy Awards Sunday night in Los Angeles.
Hackman, who died recently, was honored with an individual tribute from his fellow Unforgiven and Under Suspicion co-star Morgan Freeman before the traditional segment began. "This week our community lost a giant, and I lost a dear friend, Gene Hackman," Freeman said before the Oscars In Memoriam segment. "He received two Oscars and more importantly he won the hearts of film lovers all over the world." Other stars honored, who passed away within the last year, included David Lynch, Teri Garr, Joan Plowright, Louis Gossett Jr., Kris Kristofferson, and Bob Newhart. The highlight of the segment was a tribute to legendary music producer Quincy Jones, who was honored in a separate segment by The Color Purple costars Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey, which featured a spirited performance of "Ease On Down The Road" by Queen Latifah. Of course many viewers were left upset after the 2025 Oscars 'In Memoriam' left out several important names. Among the big names missing from the In Memoriam portion of the 2025 Oscars telecast on Sunday night included Olivia Hussey, Mitzi Gaynor, Alain Delon, Tony Todd, Michelle Trachtenberg, Shannen Doherty, Bernard Hill, Silvia Pinal, along with documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock. Instead, they were all featured on a much longer 'In Memoriam' list published on the Academy’s website.
